Cheers Bill - I'll need to recheck my old beer history books but I reckon there were TWO Wenceslaseses, one of whom was certainly hanging out in the Plzen region a few centuries after the one I'm thinking of. From memory the confusion comes in because the firt was not a real King but was 'upgraded' by the Pope after his death for being so good.
I think we may need Martyn to sort this one out.

I love their beers and their fascinating history so I feel obliged to comment .It is the first time that I have heard the claims that Weihenstephan was granted the first brewing licence or that King Wenceslas was involved . The King Wenceslas of Christmas Carol fame gave brewing rights to the citizens of Plzen , Bohemia ,in about 1295 and I think the Weihenstephan licence was granted some 250 years earlier, 1040, by the city of Freising , Bavaria . There are references to other licences but the point of distinction for Weihenstephan is that it is still operating today so its the oldest still operating licenced brewery .I've been told this on a number of occasions in Freising and Czech and my friends there would want me to pass that on .
happy brew year to all , Bill.
p.s. JS Golden Ale , peaches and maple syrup featured in my christmas ham glaze .

I have been to Weihenstephan on a number of occasions , (not to study) but to meet with brewers ‚researchers and students. The label-less bottle of 2009 Holgate Xmas Ale, the prelude to Beelzebub's Jewels, was a gift from the Holgate brewery when we stayed their for our 1st wedding anniversary.
It will sit beautifully alongside 3 years of Red Hill Christmas Ale (2008, 2010 & 2011) and a big spread of cheeses!
