Western Australia champions the best bottled beer at Sydney Royal Beer & Cider Show

The Sydney Royal Beer & Cider Show has uncovered Australia’s Champion Bottled Beer with the honour going to Western Australia’s Nail Brewing Australia. The Bassendean-based brewer won the title for their Clout Stout – a brew that is renowned for its full-bodied flavour and smooth finish.

The RAS has been judging Beer as part of the Summer Fine Food Show since the Sydney Royal Beer Competition was established in 2007; however 2013 marked a momentous occasion in the competition’s history as it is now a standalone event due to its increasing popularity.

The increase in popularity saw 149 entries put under the judging microscope, with 108 beers and 41ciders – the first time cider had been included in the Show. Classes judged included Golden Lagers, Dark Lagers, Pale and Golden Ales, Amber and Dark Ales, Stouts and Porters, Wheat Beers, Strong Beers, Reduced Alcohol Beer, Cider, Perry and Speciality Beer.

71 medals were presented – a statistic that highlights the overall high standard of beer and cider throughout Australia.

There were a number of high achieving exhibitors who won a swag of medals including; Redoak from Cammeray in NSW who took home 11 medals – four silver and seven bronze, and Matilda Bay Brewing Company from Port Melbourne in Victoria who won 13 medals – four Silver and nine Bronze.

Respected industry expert, Ian Kingham took on the role of Chief Judge in the absence of Neal Cameron who was unable to attend due to illness. Mr Kingham said that the judging process in Sydney is the toughest in the country, with a Gold medal highly sought after by all exhibitors.

“Overall, I was really pleased with the standard of entries received across the competition with a high number of medals awarded. The beer entries were of a consistently good standard and I was very encouraged by the cider entries considering that the industry is still very young in Australia,” Mr Kingham said.

“I think we will continue to see improvement in the standard of cider entries given this was its first year of judging. As the industry continues to grow, I am very confident that the caliber of entries and the number of medals awarded will grow significantly.”
