Nail Brewing Australia (Bassendean, Western Australia) has teamed up with the Water Corporation and the Town of Bassendean to test 182 houses with fixed beer lines into private home kitchens. The operation which has been 2 years in the planning will start pouring Nail Ale today.

The idea started off from a beer between the brewers at Nail Brewing and Andy Nylund who works for Water Corporation. It took 2 years in the making and $1.1 million investment. Brewer Dan Turley said, “It will revolutionalise not just beer distribution but an estimated 100,000 people in Australia by 2017.”

Over $200,000 was spent researching and focused on:

  • Cooling the beer before pouring.
  • Keeping beer stability in stagnant lines.
  • Recording volume of beer.
  • Cleaning and rinsing pipe work.
  • Legal licensing issues

Just like Foxtel is now in over 1.5 million houses, the growth of beer lines in the regular household kitchen only adds up to savings for everyone. Dan Turley said, “Its good for the environment with less glass and less transport”. Because we use less packing, less transport and excise on draught beer is cheaper, the consumer will end up saving the equivalent to about $8.85/carton. To get the savings, the household will need to drink the equivalent to 3 cartons per week.

182 houses have already had their lines installed in Bassenden. Nail Brewing is based in Bassendean, so supply fresh Nail Ale in a 5km radius was the first step. In future each suburb will be installed with refrigerated serving tanks which can service approximately 1800 houses a week in a 5km radius.

Western Australia has a history of pioneering in craft beer with the Sail and Anchor being the first microbrewery in Australia. Today there are 38 microbreweries in WA and over 200 in Australia. Though Craft beer is only 2% of the beer market it is the fasted growing in Australia. Drink Fresh, drink local Australia craft.

Nail Brewing was established in 2000 and is one of Australia’s most awarded breweries consistently winning golds in all 3 of Australias major beer awards. Nail Ale is an Australian Pale Ale is the beer choosen to be first poured in Bassendean. Nail other beers include Golden Nail, Nail Stout, Clout Stout and the Nail Brew Log Collection (a different beer every 6 weeks). Nail Beers are distributed in WA, NSW, Victoria and Queensland.

Brewer Dan Turley final comment was, “Would you believe such a great idea of fixed beer lines in housing would start on April fools day?”.
