Willie Smith’s has joined forces with Hobart Brewing Co to create a rare Smoked Apple Bock.

To create the beer, Hobart head brewer Scott Overdorf visited Lark Distillery with applewood supplied by Willie Smith’s head cider maker Dr Tim Jones.

“We spent most of the day with the help of Lark’s distillers peat smoking barley with the applewood,” he said.

“The lads from Willie Smith’s rolled into our brewery the next morning, and with 100 litres of freshly pressed organic apple juice in tow, we brewed a German inspired dunkel bock.

“The result of our labour of love is a rich and malty dark winter warmer with ruby highlights. Apple and smoke on the nose. Full bodied maltiness upfront with caramel and raison notes followed by red apple flavours from the Willie’s blend of Royal Gala, Pink Lady and Fuji. Finishing with subtle and lingering sweet apple wood smoke.”

The Beer is now available at Hobart Brewery’s Red Shed Tap Room in Macquarie Point. It will be Beer of the Month at Willie Smith’s Apple Shed in July and will be pouring during the Huon Valley Mid Winter Festival between July 15 and 17.

It’s Willie Smith’s second foray into beer following the Moo Brew Apple Saison collaboration, released earlier this year.

“The first one celebrated the new season apples, this one is an apple-based beer for winter using the smoked apple wood to create some amazing flavours perfect for winter,” Dr Jones said.
