Still more hops...

Two Metre Tall Company
We couldn’t mention hop producing breweries without mentioning Tasmania’s Two Metre Tall brewery which produces its own, well, everything.

Brewer Ashley Huntington picks his Bruny Island hops

Jane Huntington told Australian Brews News that they are getting ready to harvest their hops, and while they don’t call it a harvest ale as such, the hops will be used green in their March-brewed Derwent Clear Ale.

The Derwent Clear Ale is the brewery’s wheat ale, brewed using 60 per cent wheat malts. All of their ales are naturally cloudy and the “clear ale” name refers to the hue and paler colour of this beer relative to their others.

The Huntingtons will be using their own-grown heritage hop varieties of Fuggles, Goldings and Bruny Island hops. The beer won’t be labelled as a harvest ale, but Jane advises enthusiasts to check the neck labels of the beer and March-stamped beers will be made using the fresh hops.

UPDATE:

Jane and Ashley Huntington from the Two Metre picked their hops over the weekend, and Ashley will be brewing a wet-hopped ale today (March 15) using Fuggles and Bruny Island Hops.

Bruny Island Hops

The Bruny Island hop is a rare heirloom variety that Janes says originated from a plant by found by a hop breeder years ago growing on a picket fence on Bruny Island. He was unable to identify the variety but they think it may be close to old English variety, Fuggle and it has large cones and a beautiful tropical fragrance.

Taswegians and those lucky to live within the brewery’s limited distribution area should look out for the Macrh 15 brew of the Derwent Clear Ale will be their harvest ale for this year.
