Balmain Brewing Company launch new beer
With the recent creation of the Balmain Brewing Company, the inner-Sydney suburb of Balmain once again has a beer to call its own. Balmain Original Pale Ale, the company’s inaugural brew, is a full-strength (a touch under 5 percent) English-style ale, which spokesman Martin Lalor reckons will be the perfect accompaniment for a hot meal during the coming winter months.
The draught-only Pale Ale is already on tap at two Balmain peninsula pubs: the Royal Oak and the Welcome Hotel. In another 3–4 weeks, it will be flowing in five Balmain outlets, and seven elsewhere, according to Lalor.
Lalor and his three partners don’t come from brewing industry backgrounds, but all appreciate good beer and all have great affection for the suburb of Balmain. Learning of a former brewery which had made the highly-regarded Balmain Bock and Balmain Lager in the late 1980s, the four friends decided to revive the Balmain beer brand. They registered their new company in February 2010, trialled dozens of ale recipes over several months, and the first batch of their chosen formula was ready for drinking towards the end of last month.
These Balmain locals are determined to see their beer on tap in every pub in their home suburb, and others farther afield. While Balmain Pale Ale is currently being brewed at a small contract brewery, it is part of their vision to open their own Balmain Microbrewery and Restaurant.
