New awards for the nation's best brews

gold-medalThe Royal Queensland Food & Wine Show is set to stimulate the taste buds of a nation of beer drinkers with its first ever beer show to be judged on 21 October 2010.

Expecting to receive entries from more than 100 Australian brewed beers for judging, with gold, silver and bronze medals up for grabs; the offering will be a comprehensive snapshot of the quality of Australian brewing for the industry and a trustworthy purchasing guide for consumers.

Show Judge Brennan Fielding of Burleigh Brewing Co, who has been involved in judging competitions around the world said he was pleased Queensland now has its own competition.

“I’m stoked that a Beer Show is finally happening in Queensland. It’s very relevant to the interest of consumers to have a range of judges at a show. We’re so happy to be involved, it’s our backyard and we’re hoping people will be attentive to not just our beers but to all boutique brewers.”

As part of the Beer Show, the drinking public will be able to attend a delicious beer seminar, and sample the best of the Show with a six-pack of Judges Selection Medal Beers available through Drinx retail outlets in Queensland and online nationally at www.drinx.com.au.

Eight classes will be judged with up to 50 points awarded to each beer based on appearance, aroma, flavour and overall impression.

  • Golden Lager – Continental / Pilsner Style
  • Golden Lagers – Australian Style
  • Dark Lagers
  • Pale / Golden Ales
  • Amber and Dark Ales
  • Stouts and Porters
  • Wheat beers
  • Strong Beers – min alcohol content 6%v/v

Chief Judge Ian Chant said the Beer Show is an opportunity for brewers to showcase their talents.

“It is difficult for many small brewers to get in front of consumers and have their voice heard. Competition brings a wider range of products into the spotlight and gives consumers assistance meeting their needs – a fantastic tool for them, as they can have confidence in the panel of judges, the beers having been discussed and ‘anointed’ by experts.”
