Are you an iron brewer?

Fremantle’s Sail & Anchor Hotel has launched a competition to find an amateur brewer able to clone an old Sail & Anchor brew, the Iron Brew English Strong Ale.

If you can successfully recreate the brew you will see your recreation brewed and put on tap at the iconic hotel. Second and third prizes include a keg of Sail & Anchor IPA and $100 cash.

The English Strong Ale-styled beer is described as having a high charge of Pale Malt with a generous proportion of Dark Crystal Malt for a luscious caramel and toffee palate and a touch of roasted barley. The gently balancing bitterness and lingering finish is provided by Noble hop pellets and flowers with a late kettle addition for aroma. The style is marked by a very full colour, deep copper, with a hint of ruby, which comes from the dark and caramelized roasted malts. The aroma should be an intricate array of rich currant-like fruitiness, blackstrap molasses and higher alcohols, more reminiscent of liqueur.

Entries close March 8, 2011 and winners will be announced March 26, 2011.

Entry forms can be downloaded here and full style guidelines are available here.
