Beer for a cause–the result

March 25, 2011 by Editor Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago, the Local Taphouses – with the help of some generous brewers – added their weight to a New Zealand-wide night of drinking beer and fundraising.

The results have been tallied and the two venues combines raised more than $4800 for charitable causes associated with the New Zealand earthquake relief.

Generous patrons donated almost $900 plus a further $360 was raised from selling some donated bottle stock in St Kilda, all of which is being donated to the Red Cross.  A massive $3600 was also raised from selling keg beers donated by Matilda Bay and The Little Brewing Co which will be donated to a charitable fund soon to be set up the Brewers Guild of New Zealand to assist those breweries, brewpubs and beer bars in Christchurch directly affected by the earthquake disaster.

If you needed any more reason to get along to the Kiwi SpecTAPular on May 21 at the Taphouses, they will also be donating the door proceeds from both venues to quake relief.

Congratulations to the generous beer drinkers, brewers and the Taphouses for the support of those affected by the New Zealand quake.

A fundraising effort that we didn’t previously know about was a fundraiser organised in last month by Yulli’s restaurant in Surry Hills. Yulli’s, with the help of beer donated by Little Brewing Co (again), raised $3000 which has been split between the New Zealand earthquake and Queensland flood and cyclone relief efforts.

Congratulations to all involved. More proof if any was needed that beer people are good people.

Donations can still be made to the New Zealand relief efforts.
