The Lobethal Bierhaus, established in 2007, also won the Small Brewery and South Australian Brewery titles, as well as the Champion Porter category for their Lobethal Bierhaus Red Truck Porter.

Announced at the Griffins, Hindmarsh Square, on Friday, July 15, the winners included a mix of boutique and mainstream brewers.

South Australian favourite Coopers took out the Champion Stout and Large Brewery titles, while SA Brewing won best Wheat Beer for their Hahn White. Sydney’s The Australian Brewery won two classes – Best Lager
and Best Reduced Alcohol Beer, while Brewboys GTS Pale Ale (Croydon Park, SA) took out the Champion Ale trophy.

An initiative of the Royal Agricultural & Horticultural Society (RA&HS), the Royal Adelaide Beer Show aims to recognise the importance of the Australian beer industry, which injects around $7 billion into the Australian
economy each year. The competition also aims to provide an opportunity for small breweries to test their wares against the big brewers, and to reach new markets in South Australia and interstate.

RA&HS President Mr Richard Fewster said the Royal Adelaide Beer Show – the first staged by the Society since the 1800s – had attracted a strong field of entries from South Australia, New South Wales and Tasmania.

“The Judges tell me that many of the categories were extremely close, with both well-known and boutique breweries vying for trophies to assist in elevating their brand and achieving recognition amongst their peers,” Mr
Fewster said.

Chief Beer Judge Simon Fahey said over two days 80 entries were individually judged, each entry was judged in reference to specific beer style guidelines.

“Of the total number of entries, 18% received gold medals, 28% were given silver medals and 29% received bronze medals,” Mr Fahey said.
