You can tell summer is almost upon us. Our newspapers are filled with full-page ads for beer specials at big box retailers and Australia’s summer of beer promotions has kicked off. Carlton Draught has already announced their Cox Plate day beer race featuring ‘Shirvo’, and now their east coast tour with comedian Rosso of Merrick and Rosso fame playing the role of a corpulent publican.
Rosso has an interesting take on living out every bloke’s dream of ‘running a pub their way’ as it’s unlikely that ‘his way’ will include the freedom to pour any beers that he wants instead of just the sponsor’s product. Then again, lazy publicans taking hefty cash rebates to serve a very limited selection of beers seems to be how most pubs and clubs in Australia run, so the empirical evidence would suggest that is the dream of every aspiring publican.

Carlton Draught hands Aussie pubs over to comedian Tim ‘Rosso’ Ross to provide locals with a night of laughs
Carlton Draught has given comedian Tim ‘Rosso’ Ross the keys to the best pubs in Australia, inviting him to step in and take control of the bar, have a good laugh and share a brewery fresh Carlton Draught with the locals.
As ‘The Publican’ Rosso will visit more than 30 pubs up and down the East Coast, spending an evening sharing hilarious stories and a laugh with both the regulars and the blow-ins, giving them a night at their local that will go down in pub history.
‘The Publican’ will take centre-stage at the featured pubs for one night to run things his way – from chewing the fat with the locals to delivering a dedicated new pub stand-up comedy show. Rosso has also promised to bring some of his Black Rose musician mates along to the party, ensuring that it’s a fun and memorable night at the pub.
The well-known comedian and author has gone to great lengths to assume the role of ‘The Publican’, donning a fat suit and completing a Responsible Service of Alcohol course in preparation.
“For me, nothing beats going to the pub and having a schooner of Carlton Draught. I like the ritual of stopping at a pub, pulling up a stool and having a yarn with other locals,” said Rosso. “Now as ‘The Publican’ I get to swap radio microphones for beer taps and live-out every Aussie bloke’s dream of running a pub their way.”
‘The Publican’ tour will kick-off on Sunday October 23rd at the Woollahra Hotel, Woollahra from 4pm, with Rosso running the pub for up to four hours. The next two stops on the tour will be:
- Robin Hood Hotel, Waverly – October 25th 6pm
- Honeysuckle Hotel, Newcastle – October 26th 6pm
“Sharing a beer and a laugh at the pub with your mates is a classic Aussie tradition,” said Andrew Meldrum, group marketing manager for Carlton Draught at CUB. “Rosso has teamed up with Carlton Draught to celebrate everything we love about a night out at the local.”
The Rosso ‘Publican’ tour will continue on throughout October, November and December 2011. For dates and locations visit: http://www.facebook.com/CarltonDraught.
