The Second Coming of Temple

I saw it said the other day that Australian craft brewers are being squeezed out of the market resulting in less choice for consumers and a dwindling local beer industry. Yet, I can’t remember a year in which more independent craft breweries opened or when there was more variety on tap and in bottle shops. It’s not easy but good beer from good brewers seems to keep finding a home.I can’t think of a better time to be a craft beer drinker than right now…hopefully 2012 will just keep getting better. And it looks good with the year ending to exciting news about a ‘new’ brewery for Melbourne, with Temple Brewing’s much anticipated brewery is finally opening in Brunswick.

Husband and wife team Ron and Renata Feruglio established Temple as a brewery-to-watch when Ron was crafting his beers on other people’s breweries for a few years and making some excellent brews. The challenges of using other’s equipment and maintaining supply saw them invest in the own brewery that has taken a long time to come to fruition. But good things come to those who wait, and that wait is nearly over. They now have a brewery, and have secured distribution so look out for their beers near you in the new year – and beers from their own brasserie from next Monday.

THE SECOND COMING OF TEMPLE
A NEW BEGINNING IN BRUNSWICK EAST

Beer lovers may remember Temple Brewing Company for the highly awarded beers it produced from 2007 to early 2010. And if you do, you might also have noticed that they’ve been off the shelves for over 18 months. Why the hiatus? Glad
you asked…

In the original phase of the Temple story, Ron and Renata Feruglio – the husband and wife team behind the beer – took Temple from mere homebrewing to their fulltime day jobs by renting the equipment at other breweries around Victoria to brew their Pale Ale, Special Bitter, Saison and Soba Ale.

The beers were a success, and the duo are now back with phase two: Temple Brewery & Brasserie.

The brewery has been more than 18 months in the making, and it’s finally time for Temple to throw open the hand-crafted timber doors to the public – all things handmade and a thorough attention to detail are themes that you’ll notice all around the new premises.

Inside the converted warehouse there’s a custom designed stainless steel and copper brewery from Canadian specialists Newlands Systems Inc. that has been running at capacity since the very moment it was commissioned to bring you the old Temple favourites, plus a few new ones to add to the lineup.

But it’s not just a new brewery at the 122 Weston Street site. The front third is split into two levels – bar & brasserie downstairs with a second bar and beer education area upstairs – both looking out through a wall of glass to a sea of stainless steel.

Ron Feruglio

Ron Feruglio, Brewmaster, says of the brewery opening: “After having invested so much of ourselves in designing and building the brewery, we are excited to finally have our own place where we can take Temple to a new level.”

“When we first started out, having our own brewery was always the dream,” adds Renata Feruglio, General Manager.

“To finally have that up and running, and be working with passionate like-minded people is incredibly exciting.”

Of course, great beer needs great food to match, and Raymond Chang, Head Chef, has developed a menu that complements Ron’s beers to a tee. Raymond brings a passion for the Slow Food movement to a menu that takes much of its inspiration from the world’s greatest beer foods. This is a menu where toasted sandwiches and a ‘chilli bag’ happily co-exist with pickled quail eggs and confit artichokes, and they’r e all perfectly suited to the complexities of flavour in Temple’s beers.

“I wanted the food to match Ron’s passion for technique and contemporary takes on traditional ideas,” says Raymond of the new menu.

“Temple Brasserie is a mirror of these ideals, drawing on the traditions of European brewhouses and brasseries, and utilising fresh sustainable produce.”

Temple Brewery & Brasserie is open for business from Monday 19 December. Opening hours til the new year are 11am– 11pm Monday to Saturday and 11am – 9pm on Sunday (and we’re closed for public holidays).

If you can’t get to the new brewery, don’t despair. Temple beers will be back on the market Australia-wide in the new year thanks to the excellent distributors at Phoenix Beers. Temple joins the Phoenix range of world-famous beers and ciders as their first Australian microbrewery.
