A black pilsner?

First we had a black India pale ale, now we have a black pale lager, courtesy of Doctor’s Orders Brewing.

Doctor’s Orders – aka Darren Robinson – is a Sydney-based toll brewer who has been developing a name putting out seasonal one-off brews in a range of interesting styles, including Zephyr, an unfiltered double white ale, and Synapse, a black saison.

His latest creation, Iron Lung, is described as giving you ‘everything you enjoy in Black IPA’s with the distinctive nuisances of a lager with the colour twist.’

The beer is a stronger and more flavourful (imperial) version of the classic pilsner with dehusked chocolate malt used late in the brewing to add colour while not imparting much flavour, with the dissonance between colour and flavour adding to the experience of the beer.

The beer is described as being:

Iron Lung showcases Australian and German malts; American and New Zealand hops in a hop forward but approachable Autumn lager. The American hops welcome you into a prolonged journey of wonderful bitterness backed with a complimentary balance of malt and lager derived flavour.”

It uses pilsner, munich and special de- husked chocolate malt, with Columbus, Tomahawk, Zeus, New Zealand Sauvin and Citra hops with a Bavarian lager yeast. The beer is 6.9% ABV and 60+ IBUs.

The beer is being released today, and will be available at:
