Raise a glass for literacy at Bayview Tavern

Gladesville’s Bayview Tavern will be hosting Beers for Books, a fundraising initiative supporting global charity Room to Read, on Wednesday June 27.

Beers for Books encourages guests to enjoy a drink all in the name of helping child literacy initiatives in developing nations. $1 from every drink sold puts a local language book in the hands of a child who may otherwise not have access to books.

This Beers for Books event is an initiative of Room to Read volunteers David Luschwitz and Kosalay Pather. Both David and Kosalay teach in local schools and value the gift of literacy that we take for granted in Australia.

David said: “Being a teacher, empowerment through education is close to my heart. I believe education is the key to the eradication of global poverty.”

Personal experience makes Kosalay acutely aware of the importance of literacy: “Room to Read has a special significance to me as my South African grandmother was never given the opportunity to learn to read or write. This lack of education severely limited the choices available to her throughout her life and continues to do so.”

Michael Smith, Manager of the Bayview Tavern said: “It is a real privilege to be able to host the Beers for Books event and the whole team is really looking forward to a great night that supports a very worthy cause.”

A raffle and auction feature great prizes that have been donated by local businesses and include an artwork by renowned artist John Phillips, an iPad, outdoor furniture, and NRL memorabilia.
