A beer to celebrate 150 years of Newtown
On 12 December 1862 Newtown Municipality was proclaimed by Government Gazette, covering 480 acres in three wards: Enmore, Kingston and O’Connell. By the 1870s, Newtown was one of the most densely populated municipalities in NSW and a decade later was one of the main retail centres outside the city.
King Street is Newtown’s spine. The first track through Newtown followed roughly the same alignment as today’s King Street. This ‘bullock route’ probably followed an Aboriginal path across the ridges to the Cooks River. Originally known as the Bulanaming Road and later as the Cooks River or Newtown Road, it was officially named King Street in 1877. Its retail strip developed from the 1880s and soon it became one of Sydney’s busiest suburban commercial centres. Today, Newtown is a vibrant, diverse and interesting suburb, a creative hub full of art, live music, and great places to eat and drink.
Wednesday, the 12th of December, 2012, marks 150 years of Newtown. The Proclamation Day will be celebrated with a street fair in Brown St, Newtown. Also, on this day, Young Henrys will be launching the “Newtowner” to celebrate.
The idea came after some discussion with the Newtown Business Precinct Association. As Newtown’s own brewery, the opportunity to participate in this historic occasion was too good to pass up!
As a nod to Sydney’s colonial past, Newtowner is a 4.8% beer in the style of an English Summer Ale made with Australian Pale and English Crystal malts. It is finished with a trio of Australian hops, producing a golden, refreshing beer with a well-rounded malt and hop balance and a slightly dry finish. Perfect for Newtowners to enjoy this summer.
Local Designer, Ben Hay from Honey Rogue Design, took the base Young Henrys logo and added the Newtown postcode, touches of native Cadigal country flora and a slightly surreal edge to the artwork, hinting at Newtown’s bohemia.
The beer will be available at the Courthouse Hotel in Australia Street, Newtown from the 12th of December and then at other pubs, bars and restaurants throughout the 2042 postcode. Launching as a limited release, the decision whether the beer is made on an ongoing bases will be up to the people of Newtown and it’s visitors.
