Critics Choice Top 100 Countdown #10

hargreaves hill esbNumber ten in the Critics’ Choice Top 100 is the Hargreaves Hill ESB. Reborn from the smouldering ashes of Black Sunday, the Hargreaves Hill brewery sits with pride amongst the quality artisans in the Yarra Valley.

From the brewer’s notes we take that ‘this is a “new world” interpretation of the classic English style. This ale features considerable crystal malt character, as a backbone to carry the hefty bitterness. Substantially dry hopped with carefully selected hops from either the US, NZ, or Australia, this adds aromatic and flavour notes of ripe passionfruit.’

Matt Kirkegaard refers to the ESB as ‘Hargreaves Hill’s signature and head-turning beer. Perhaps not as widely known nationally as it is in its home state, it is still perennial favourite in Victoria and amongst those who have tried it and wish they could get it at home. The new-world interpretation can confound, but still manages to delight.’
