Van Dieman mashes up for GABS

Dubbel_Shot_Tasting_notesThe first in our new series of collaborative brews, The Mash Up Series is a collection of collaborative brews with local Tasmanian primary producers. A Mash up can be best described as a composition created by blending two or more products, usually one seamlessly over another, to the extent that such works are “transformative” of original content.

This Belgian Abbey Dubbel is infused with cold drip coffee from local roasters, Ritual Coffee. The coffee is never introduced to the heat element that tends to drain the flavour of the bean itself. Instead, the cold drip makes the product far less acrid and presents itself as a naturally sweetened and very noticeably smoother liquid. Approximately 120L in total was used.

Avoiding the charred bitterness normally associated with coffee additions in beers, a beautifully sweet and rich hazelnut coffee aroma lingers, along with Belgian chocolate and bready malt character. These blend seamlessly into a complex palate, expectant of the Dubbel style, filled with raisins, spices, dark fruit and creamy malt sweetness. Effectively, a match made in heaven, between the rich dark Dubbel elements of the beer and the smooth very well-bodied coffee.

The beer will be launched at GABS 2013 and public release will occur in early June.

Van Dieman will also be represented at Pint of Origin Tas at Gertrude Hotel and at the Taste of Tasmania Dinner at Pure South with MooBrew Friday 24th May.
