Kyle has worked in the U.S. craft brewing industry for the past six years in the Rocky Mountain West, making his way to Australia this year with high hopes of what’s to come. He sees Australia as, “the new craft beer frontier,” and is excited to be welcomed into the promising local craft brewing industry. Kyle hopes to become an integral part of the community, and is optimistic for what the upcoming years will hold for himself and SBBC.

His background as a brewer has been heavily influenced by Czech-style lager brewing, classical beer styles, and barrel-aged beers. Working most recently with Red Rock Brewing Co. out of Salt Lake City, Utah, he had a firsthand opportunity to produce world-class beers alongside an award-winning brew team. Before his time at Red Rock, Kyle worked for Bohemian Brewery, also in Salt Lake, where the primary focus was double decocted lagers brewed to ‘reinheitsgebot’ standards (German Purity Laws). Through these experiences, he has found his passion and talent in brewing traditional German lagers and barrel work––skills he hopes to share with the Australian craft brewing industry.

Ben Israel General Manager at Southern Bay Brewing says “Kyle is a great bloke who brings strong engineering and technical knowledge to our Brewery and has already improved quality. His immediate impact can be seen in the new roof, further capital upgrades of new equipment and ongoing staff training. The passion is there and now we’re all looking forward to seeing his creative ability in the second half of the year with new single batch beers. He’s great to work with and has fitted in well with our Brew Crew and customers”

Aside from his brewing prowess, Kyle is a Certified Cicerone®, the equivalent of a sommelier for beer (one of two currently in Australia). Using his knowledgeable background in a diverse variety of techniques and equipment, along with a keen palate for beer, Kyle is likely to make his mark in the Victorian microbrewers scene.
