10,000 Pints of Pleasure

Canberra BrewersWhat to do with over a tonne of malted barley, 25kg of hops and some 300 packets and vials of yeast? Making 10 000 pints of beer is a good start!

In a triple header Canberra Brewers, after hosting the 2013 National Australian Amateur Homebrewers Association finals are topping up this year with both the Nationals and world renowned Australian National HomeBrewers Convention.

Hosting these events are nothing new to Canberra Brewers, this is the seventh Nationals held in the nations capital since 1998, more than any other state.

Leading the charge to the Nationals are (pictured left to right); Local film-maker and Brewer Megan Watson, Dr Ulysses N Kurtz, Competition Secretary Stephen Lawford and Club President “Billy” Bilbrough.

10 000 pints aside, the big event this year, in conjunction with the National Brewing finals is the Australian National Homebrewers Convention. This biennial event has been held for last six years in Melbourne but this year takes a slightly different turn, kick-started by Melbourne brewing identity John Preston in 2008 the ANHC is now one of the world’s great amateur brewing events, drawing speakers from England, the USA and even New Zealand, with a few home grown as well.

The 2014 ANHC even promises a somewhat tenuous link to the infamous Canberra Summernats, and not just beer, it is Bogong Moth season. For thousands of years people have congregated in this very meeting place to talk and feast on the Bogong Moth, 2014 brings beer as well.

The conference itself is being held in the Great Hall at the Australian National University and the gang-gang dinner at the shockingly modern National Museum of Australia.

Oh…we do not expect that 10 000 pints of beer will be consumed at the conference, afterwards though, well we will see.
