ACCC Chair, Rod Sims
ACCC Chair, Rod Sims

This week, a year on from the ACCC’s Byron Bay intervention, we speak with the Chair of the ACCC, Rod Sims, about the ACCC’s role and function. We discuss the steps it is taking to ensure that what you see on the label is a true reflection of what’s behind the beer. Apologies for the audio quality with this interview. It was a great chat down a terrible phone line.

But first, we speak with Tim Wills from Premier Stainless. As the craft beer industry in Australia expands so too does the demand for quality stainless equipment. The recent demise of Core Brewing Concepts hurt a number of brewers – so what should you look for when you order a brewery? Should you pay in full? What are the Australian standards? Tim Wills joins the program with a primer on buying your stainless.

During the interview Tim mentions a sample quote for a stainless system, you can download these here:

  • 10 barrel (1200l) steam system
  • 10 barrel (1200l) direct-fire system

Please direct questions about these quotes to Tim.

You can also download the Premier Stainless brochure, with pricing, here.

I found this podcast really interesting. The information provided by Rod Sims was a great insight into how the ACCC works.

I found Tim Wills comments to be informative when it came to giving an insight on how Core Brewing potentially failed.

However, his dismissive attitude towards someone starting a small brewery with repurposed Dairy Equipment was disappointing. The idea that someone MUST purchase a $200,000 brewing system to make it worth while only looks at one small part of the Industry, and one particular Business Model.

Not everyone in the Industry quits their job to launch a Brewery, and not everyone wants National Distribution. A lot can be said for a part time Brewery operation, and local distribution.

Thanks for the positive feedback Steve, and for the constructive feedback. Perhaps the wrong tone came through in the comments, it wasn’t meant to be dismissive. However there is a drive towards consistent quality across the industry – even in small, locally focussed breweries. Repurposed gear can make great beer but replicability can be a challenge. It was more a counter to the idea that I increasingly encounter that a brewery can start that way with visions of following in Sierra Nevada’s footsteps. You are spot on about local distribution and part time.
