IBD unveils new branding, announces Perth conference in 2020

The Institute of Brewing and Distilling Asia Pacific Section Convention wrapped up in Wellington on Friday, with several key announcements about the organisation’s future plans.
At the Gala Dinner at Te Papa museum on Thursday night,deputy president Dr Tim Cooper revealed new branding for the IBD along with a promotional video, timed to coincide with the launch of new e-learning products.
CEO Jerry Avis told Brews News the IBD hopes the new identity will help increase its appeal to craft brewers and distillers.
“We have a long history, we go back to 1886, and I think we’re perceived as very UK-centric. We’re perceived still as very male, some would say stale and pale as well, both in terms of our demographics and our age profile. That’s a perception that people have – we’re actually very progressive but we need to alter people’s perception,” he said.

“We’re growing our network, we’re serving our members better, and this brand really signals a further change in how we’re going to be perceived in the future.”
Perth in 2020
The Institute also announced the location for its next Asia Pacific Section Convention, which will be chaired by Sean Symons of White Lakes Brewing in Baldivis, Western Australia.
“It’s my great pleasure to welcome every one of you to the 2020 convention, which will be held in Perth,” Symons said.
“A beautiful city with a thriving beer culture, passionate brewing community, distilling… no less than 60 local breweries, two large maltings with more breweries on the way and home to some of the best known brands of the last 20 years.”

CUB’s star performer
Sam Seward of AB InBev and Dr Garry Menz of Carlton & United Breweries’ Yatala facility were awarded the IBD’s highest qualification of Master Brewer at the dinner.
Menz picked up two further awards for achieving the highest marks of any Asia Pacific candidate, as well as the James S Hough Award, for having the highest marks of any Master Brewer candidate globally.
Hamish McArthur of Asahi in Laverton, Victoria and Jaspal Jassal of the Tooheys brewery in Lidcombe, NSW were awarded the Diploma in Brewing.
