Independent craft brewers across the Mornington Peninsula have united to produce a new limited-edition, collaboration beer.
Brewed today for release on September 7, this new Red XPA is aimed to come in at 5.5 per cent ABV.
The recipe was crafted by the brewers from six craft breweries on the Peninsular, including Mornington Peninsula Brewery, Red Hill Brewery, St Andrews Beach Brewery, Hickinbotham (HIX) Brewery, Jetty Road Brewery and Mr Banks Brewing Co.
Blake Bowden of Jetty Road said that the beer’s hop profile is made up of 5kgs each of Mosaic, Amarillo and Eldorado and 2kgs of Citra. The malt profile will include Gladfield’s Ale, Redback, Medium Crystal, Sheppards Deleight and Roast Barley malts.
HIX Brewery owner Andrew Hickinbotham has been looking forward to coming together with the other brewers.
“It’s a bourgeoning industry and it’s just great to see all the brewers work together because we’ve got a long way to go, and the industry is going to change pretty fast with all the new breweries and distilleries opening up down here”.
“It’s nice to see that we’re all working together.”
The brew day even attracted the Mayor of the Mornington Peninsula, Bryan Payne, who said that this is the first time brewers on the Mornington have come together like this.
“It’s a great initiative to get all the brewers together.”
“It’s not only good from a marketing point of you, because the Peninsula has got some fantastic craft beers, but also it’s good to swap notes and techniques, so the technical side of things is great isn’t it.”
Mornington Peninsula Brewery CEO Matt Bebe said that collaborations like this are important especially with significant growth in the region.
“It is great that in an increasingly competitive world that we are all coming together, to not only raise awareness of the region, but also the independent craft beer movement.”
Craft beer drinkers can taste the new beer in each of the breweries from Friday September 7. They also have the opportunity to name the new brew and win a year in craft beer.* To enter please visit.
Hickinbotham hopes to have a three-day event next year, with a collaboration brew, degustation dinner and bonfire.
