Fremantle based artist Liam Dee today enjoyed a beer from a can featuring his original design.
Feedback, the second beer in Otherside’s Creative Release which captures creative works reflecting four distinct seasonal beer styles, now showcases Liam’s bold acrylic on board design entitled Forrest.
Feedback is a India Helles Lager and described by brewer Rhys Lopez as having ‘the crisp malt and yeast of our Social lager but with amped up hops and sitting at around 6.5%. The tropical passionfruit and dank resin from the hops meld smoothly for a bold finish.’
Liam, was one of numerous local artists who submitted a design for possible inclusion in the 2019/20 Creative Release. The Creative Release is an annual program that forms part of Otherside’s Tapped initiative which provides creative platforms for local artists to showcase their work to new and wider audiences. In addition to his design being the face of Feedback for three months, he also receives a $1,000 grant; and a three-month artist residency at Freo.Social.
Commenting on the creative series and his work Liam said, “I heard about Otherside’s Creative Series opportunity and I thought I would give it a shot.
“I do a lot of surrealism and when I did this piece, I was going through a pretty heavy skeleton phase. But, I think, for the subject, it works quite well.
“It’s been really awesome to be involved. Most of the time there aren’t many ways of getting your work out there, so this sort of opportunity is fantastic for getting your art into the hands of the people. It’s already had a pretty good response and I am stoked to have been selected!” Liam added.
All nominations were reviewed and selected by a panel of judges including Otherside Brand Manager, Sally Tucker; Block Branding Creative Director, Mark Braddock; and AGWA’s Exhibition Designer Dani Lye and Acting Chief Curator Dr Ric Spencer.
Commenting on the calibre of submissions, Sally Tucker Otherside Brand Manager said, “we were blown away by the high quality of submissions received. It was very difficult to choose but, in the end, we couldn’t go passed Liam’s vibrant, fresh and intriguing artwork, which so well conveys our Summer brew.
“The Creative Release offers a strong platform for young creatives to showcase their work. We’ve seen so many outstanding submissions and look forward to collaborating even more with local artists on future Creative Releases.”
Otherside is now seeking expressions of interest from local artist for the next beer in the Creative Series, Distortion – a Kettle Sour.
Artists can self-nominate to be part of Otherside’s Creative Release with nominations now open. Submissions must be submitted via the Tapped website at www.tappedbyotherside.com from 4 November 2019. Nominations will close at 5pm 16 December 2019.
The successful artist will also have their artwork featured on cans of Distortion as part of the Creative Series for three months; receive a $1,000 grant; and a three-month artist residency at Freo.Social. The release event for Distortion will be held at a new pop-up venue at AGWA in early 2020.
Feedback will be available from 1 November until mid-January at Otherside Brewhouse and Freo.Social and from various retailers from 4 November.
Established in 2015, Tapped by Otherside is a fund, enabled by the sale of Otherside beer. It invests back onto WA’s creative industries through grants and platforms designed to support emerging talent with past winners including musician Stella Donnelly, band manager Kelsie Miller, film-maker Tom de Souza and many more.
