Established business Social Bandit Brewing Co, located in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, is up for sale.
Owner and brewer Jeff Whyte founded the business in 2015 after having previously set up the nearby Jamieson Brewery.
He told Brews News he decided to sell the brewery as his partner is currently living in New Zealand and the COVID-19 pandemic proved that the long-distance lifestyle was not for them. As a result, he will be making New Zealand home.
Social Bandit is located in the town of Mansfield, Victoria, a well-known tourist town and a gateway to the High Country.
Its proximity to tourist destinations including the Mount Stirling and Mount Buller ski resorts, Lake Eildon, Mansfield Zoo and a raft of hiking and mountain biking trails means that in normal times it has a near-year-round tourist trade.
The clientele is an even mix of tourists and locals from the town, which has a population of approximately 5,000.
With an uptick in domestic tourism likely in the coming months as restrictions start to ease, it could be a great opportunity to help develop a local business, support local jobs and contribute to the region’s tourism attractions too.
“Mansfield is known for its tourism,” explained Whyte. “The winter ski season and lakes and rivers as well as the High Country in summer makes it a really good and busy tourist destination, and we’re the only brewery in the area.”
Whyte invested in a German-built brewkit, a 12hL Salm three-vessel brewhouse which is part of the sale. It includes mash tun, lauter tun and a separate whirlpool, with the ability to do step mashes and brew a raft of beer styles. It is capable of producing 150,000 litres a year at three brews a week.
There is also an on-site counter pressure bottle filler and labeller sized to the volumes of the maturation tanks, and kegging can be done direct from tanks also.
The business model operates as an on-premise brewery and restaurant, with takeaway and wholesale functions with a full commercial kitchen including a pizza oven.
The brewery has a capacity of up to 80, with three staff currently employed.
Social Bandit Brewery is located at 223 Mt Buller Road. The sale includes the leasehold on the venue, the brewing equipment and brand.
With an asking price of $590,000 plus SAV, expressions of interest can be made to Jeff Whyte at [email protected].
