Shelter Brewing Co wins a slew of awards for beer, packaging, design and architecture

Shelter Brewing Co has bagged a swag of awards at the Perth Royal Beer Awards, taking the top gong for Best Packaging and Design for the Shelter Summer Sour.

Shelter Lager (draught) was awarded Gold, the Summer Sour (packaged) awarded Silver, and Shelter XPA (draught and packaged), IPA (packaged) and Summer Sour (draught) all awarded Bronze medals in the brewery’s first entry in any beer awards.

The 2021 Perth Royal Beer Awards judging panel comprised of 40 experts who analysed 430 entries from 43 individual brewers across 104 separate classes in 21 categories. The judges scrutinized each individual, unidentified beer scoring it out of 20 and in line with international judging criteria which considers a brew’s appearance, aroma, flavour, technical quality and style.

Head Brewer Jason Credaro said that he was thrilled with the accolades.

“Shelter is still a new brewery, some seven months old, so we’re thrilled that all of our core range of beers won medals, especially given the high standards of the Perth Royal Beer Awards,” Credaro said.

“A big thanks to our design agency Juicebox for all their work developing the Shelter brand – they’ve done a fantastic job to capture Shelter’s personality and values and apply it across every aspect of the business.”

Last week,Shelter won anAustralian Institute of Architects’ WA Architecture Awardin the commercial category.

The comments from the judges of Australian Institute of Architecture WA Chapter stated that Shelter’s expansive interior is both vast and versatile.

“The space is layered with both clear and less obvious hierarchical areas which permit both larger gatherings and smaller more intimate scaled spaces. The design is aimed to appeal to all ages and all groups. The completed building, Shelter Brewery, is a stand-alone multi-commercial venture.”

Shelter’s architect Paul Burnham said it was an honour to be recognised for his work.

“Honestly, I’m chuffed. Working with the Directors of Shelter was a dream and the final design is not only aesthetically pleasing and functional, it has proven to be very popular with my peers and most importantly with Shelter customers,” Burnham said.

In February, Shelter was featured on the world’s biggest architecture website,ArchDailythat attracts 220 million pageviews and 14 million unique visitors per month and is the number one ranked architecture website by a mile.

“ArchDaily is the go-to website for every architect and serves as a global reference point for the world’s most interesting architecture, the latest designs and showcasing the best of the best,” Burnham said.

Burnham, who also designed Little Creatures, Clancy’s Fish Bar (City Beach and Dunsborough), Balthazar (Perth), Il Lido (Cottesloe) and The Margaret River Chocolate Co Shop in Perth, said that the aesthetics of the building purposefully reflect the functionality of the fabrication and the celebration of beer.

Proudly standing on the Busselton Foreshore, Shelter Brewing Co opened in November 2020 and since then has had close to 400,000 customers through its doors.

Licensed for 650 people, the venue is 1,078 square metres on the ground floor, 427 square metres on the first floor and sits on an 1,850 square metre site adjacent to the Busselton Visitors Centre.

Shelter is more than a craft brewery. From the start, it’s been designed to be a place for people to come together, for locals to meet, families to get together and visitors to include in their itinerary of Busselton.

Open from 7am for coffee and bagels with the brewery open 10am to 10pm pouring its own beers, namely Extra Pale Ale, India Pale Ale, Summer Sour and Lager, along with a large selection of south-west wines and a food menu that focusses on simple food made beautifully.

Next week, Shelter’s second Limited Release beer will be available, a Campfire Stout – details to be released soon.
