Burnley Brewing is transforming its Bridge Road brewpub to a Bavarian bierfest from Friday September 20 to Sunday October 13 by creating 12 exclusive beers brewed on site to the traditional recipes and a Munich-inspired menu for an epic 24-day celebration of German beer styles.
Kicking off with the ringing of the bell and Schlager music on Friday September 20, beer lovers of all degrees are invited to explore each of the centuries-old German beers by the one-litre stein by ticking off their Fest card, and will be awarded a pork knuckle and Burnley Brewing
hat upon completion.
German-trained head brewer Michael Stanzel is producing each beer with imported ingredients and to the original recipe in accordance to the German Purity Law, from the very first fest beer Dunkles, to the yeast-driven wheat beer Weizen, to Bamberg’s smoky Rauchbier, Stanzel, who spent six years in Germany honing his craft, guarantees there’s a German brew for everyone.
‘Even people who’ve never tried “craft beer” love German styles because the refined brewing process produces clean, crisp beers that are seriously drinkable.’
‘People who want to have a stein with their mates will be welcomed in the same way as those who want to discover how beer has evolved over time. We want to recreate the infectious atmosphere of Oktoberfest in the best way we can.’
Only one beer, a 5.6% ABV Helles pale lager, will be available offsite in limited edition cans and kegs, with the remaining 11 styles pouring solely from Burnley’s brewpub.
Stanzel and the team began brewing the fest beers in July to allow each the time needed to lager, a lengthy but key component in traditional German brewing that many modern breweries bypass.
‘We’re in the privileged position of being able to give the beers the time and care they deserve, which bigger production focused breweries just can’t afford’, Stanzel says.
More fest highlights include a free upsize on the first beer for those who sport a dirndl or lederhosen, a lager masterclass and whole suckling free range pigs for groups of 10 or more (pre-ordering required).
A special German menu will also run each day throughout the fest, starring pork knuckle, wiener schnitzel, bretzel and bratwurst alongside Burnley Brewing’s regular menu of stone-fired pizzas and quality pub food.
The brewpub will be decorated with bunting coloured for the Bavarian flag and posters explaining the story behind each brew, with beers pouring straight from the tanks and into your stein by passionate staff.
