Brooklyn Brewery’s story of the beer that doesn’t exist.
In 2007, Brooklyn Brewery Master Brewer Garrett Oliver set out to brew a strong, rich beer to be aged in barrels, but his plan was met with resistance from the sales team and accountants – for barrel ageing is expensive, limited and risky. A brewer might spend a whole year barrel-ageing a beer only to dump the whole batch.
Fortunately, Garrett decided to brew it anyway, doing so in secret, after-hours when the brewery was closed.
That is how the beer that doesn’t exist got its name. Brooklyn Brewery’s Black Ops was never officially on the brewing schedule, and its recipe remains a secret to this day.
The beer – Brooklyn Black Ops – is now a legend. Today, this 12.4% Imperial Stout is a coveted small-batch seasonal release from the Brooklyn stable.
For the 11th Vintage of Black Ops, Brooklyn partnered with Four Roses Distillery in Kentucky, ageing the beer in small batch bourbon casks handpicked by Master Distiller Brent Elliot. Hints of mellow Bourbon character combine with big chocolate and coffee notes, richly rich underpinned by vanilla-like oak for a smooth bold finish.
Garrett Oliver, Brooklyn’s Brew Master says of the vintage. “This new version is excellent straight out of the gate – we are astonished at how polished and elegant it is already. And It will only get better over the next few years, and we’re really excited about that.”
Brooklyn Brewery Brand Manager Australia, Alex Merry, says:
“With five successful Brooklyn Brewery beer launches over the last year, releasing Black Ops is an exciting next step. With each beer we release we are celebrating a unique recipe and chapter in the story of the Brooklyn Brewery. Garrett Oliver is a story teller, and Black Ops tells the story of the rise of American craft beer and Brooklyn Brewery’s place within what has become a cultural movement.”
