Willie Smith’s mid-winter festival comes to Melbourne

An iconic Tasmanian festival is spreading the love, with a special party bringing quirky elements from the Apple Isle to Melbourne.

Huon Valley Mid-Winter Festival is a fiery pagan-inspired festival that encapsulates everything that is cool about the small state – awesome food, brilliant beer, sensational cider and wonderful wines.

Combined with high energy, quirky folk entertainment, the festival – held from July 13th -15th in the Huon Valley, south of Hobart – has quickly become a much-loved showpiece of the Tasmanian Winter.

Last year over 700 mainlanders travelled to Tasmania for the festival each year and this number continues to grow each year as the word gets out!

For those that haven’t made the journey, the team at Willie Smith’s Cider Makers – organisers of the festival – is throwing a party that gives you the chance to win a $1,800 VIP festival package to attend the real thing.

The party, at The Local Taphouse on Thursday June 7th from 6pm, will feature some of the show pieces of the festival, which was developed around the ancient tradition of Wassailing – to ward off evil spirits in the apple orchard to encourage a successful season and harvest.

“We’re bringing a bit of the festival to the city with Morris Dancers, who are a big part of the festival as part of the Wassailing procession, as well as some cool folk musicians including Blunderbuss who will really warm things up on the dance floor,” explains organiser Sam Reid.

“There will be storytelling, pace painting and we’re encouraging people to dress up in their finest Pagan/Morris/Game of Thrones/ Viking outfits to get into the spirit of what the festival is all about.

“There will be generous bar tabs up for grabs for the best dressed ($100 winner and $50 runner up for both male and female) and we will also be giving away a $1800 prize package including flights, accommodation and two weekend passes to the festival.”

Award-winning Willie Smith’s cider, including hot-spiced cider and the brand new BONE DRY 440ml cans, will be served at the party alongside products from Moo Brew & the Hobart Brewing Co as well as mulled Tassie wine.
