Willie Smith’s Traditional Apple Cider is the first nationally distributed apple cider in cans.
After the successful launch of Bone Dry cans at Dark MOFO, Willie Smith’s is pumped to launch its Traditional cider in cans at the Willie Smith’s Huon Valley Mid-Winter Festival this weekend, 13-15 July 2018.
A fitting event for the launch, as the first kegs of Traditional or TRAD – made with rare, heritage apple cider varieties – debuted at the festival last year to a huge response, outselling the popular Willie Smith’s Organic Cider.
“We’re excited to introduce more people to the next evolution of the cider category – cider made from purpose-grown cider apples – by putting Traditional into this accessible 335ml can format and rolling it out nationally,” Co-Founder Sam Reid said.
“TRADITIONAL is a new world take on the Traditional West Country and Somerset styles – we see it as a stepping stone into the world of cider apple ciders. It’s blended with 30 per cent cider apples, so is a great way to introduce Australian palates to these styles,” Reid continued.
In the same way grape varieties dictate the flavour and texture of wine, the inclusion of purpose grown cider apple varieties bring body, structure and drying tannins to the cider – un-achievable with regular table or culinary apples.
“Not only is TRADITIONAL made with cider fruit, it’s also vintage specific – only apples from that year’s harvest are included in the blend. It’s really exciting to see the subtle differences in TRADITIONAL year to year, depending on the conditions of the vintage,” Head Cider Maker Dr Tim Jones said.
“The Australian cider category has been restricted in the past to culinary apple styles due to their availability. We have invested in cider apple varieties and seven years in they are reaching maturity and starting to bear fantastic fruit – however, quantities are still very limited,” Dr Jones continued.
Willie Smith’s limited release 750ml cider apple ciders have already proven successful in international and national cider competitions and are being enthusiastically adopted as wine alternatives on wine lists around Australia including Attica, Tetsuya’s, Rockpool Bar & Grill, The Agrarian Kitchen and The Source at MONA.
“We’re really excited about broadening the category to more drinking occasions. We’re very confident in the future of this drink and Australian drinkers to embrace a serious cider that will hold its own in any alcohol category,” Reid said.
Willie Smith’s Traditional Cider is available in: Case (16 x 335ml can): RRP $75 and 4-pack (4x 355ml can): RRP $23.99.
