James Squire Malt Runner

May 27, 2010 by Taste Panel

Malt Shovel Brewery
Malt Runner
Dark lager
345ml 5.2% abv

A dark lager in time for winter and one that certainly delivers on its malty promise.

For a beer with 15% cherry juice added to the kettle, the effect is remarkably subtle. Go looking and you’ll find a faint hint of cherry-ripish chocolate, but much less than you might expect and very subtle. There’s a touch of chocolate on the nose, but more in the way of chocolate Quik than cocoa. The mouthfeel is velvety smooth and rich with a prickly carbonation on the tip of the tongue followed by an earthy, almost dusty and dry, finish. There’s more Quik at the end before the real pleasure comes in the lingering aftertaste which leaves plenty to keep you chewing and coming back for more.

A solid winter beer offering plenty of interest without venturing into the esoteric.

You’ll probably like this if: you’re too grown up for a hot Milo on a cold night but still want a little malty goodness.
