Lion Nathan-owned James Boag and Son Pty Ltd is undertaking a voluntary recall of certain batches of 375ml bottles within the best before date range of 23 June 2011 to 12 August 2011 ONLY:
Boag’s Draught, 375ml bottles
- Boag’s Draught Light, 375ml bottles
- James Boag’s Premium, 375ml bottles
- James Boag’s Premium Light, 375ml bottles
- Boag’s XXX Ale, 375ml bottles
- James Boag’s Classic Blonde, 375ml bottles
Only those products with the best before date range specified above are affected. All other James Boag’s products outside this date range and all other Lion Nathan products are unaffected.
The partial recall is due to a packaging defect, which may result in a piece of glass breaking away from the rim of the bottle upon opening.
“While we believe the risk to consumers is very low, we feel the only responsible action for us to take is to err on the side of caution and voluntarily recall potentially affected products in the best interest of protecting our consumers and customers, and maintaining our high quality standards,” the company said in its recall notice.
All consumers in possession of these products should return them to the store they bought them from for a full refund, or replacement with new, equivalent Boag’s product (if available).
“We are in the process of advising our trade customers of the recall to ensure recalled products are removed from sale. While there may be some short term effect on supply, not all Boag’s product is affected and we are working as fast as we can to minimise any impact,” the company said.
“We apologise to our trade customers and consumers for any inconvenience caused.”
Consumers are asked to call our hotline on 1800 709 609 if they have any queries.

Take empties? 🙂
Last Sunday morning I awoke on my friend’s bathroom floor to find my brain felt as though small pieces of glass were slashing it from the inside. Now I understand the reason.
i just bought a carton of boags and the screw top lid seemed to easy to get off and it was flat and there was no fizz at all and it is not the first time this has happened not very happy about the product at the moment
Thanks for the comment Scott.
I would suggest contacting the brewery via their website at http://www.boags.com.au/#/history/make-contact/
Where can I get James Boag XXX Ale in NSW?
It is without doubt the best beer I’ve tasted in ages and I cant fly down there for a while. Any idea on NSW distributors?
It would be distributed by Lion, if it’s distributed at all.
