Together we’ve brewed up a new fundraising initiative to help support volunteer beach patrols across the state. Today we launch our new Coastal Ale, Nineteen 09, with proceeds going directly back into supporting volunteer surf lifesavers.
The beer pays tribute to the first recorded rescue in Queensland, on 21st February 1909, when a group of surf lifesavers pulled four women and a man from a treacherous rip at Greenmount Beach on the Gold Coast.
SLSQ Chief Executive Officer, John Brennan OAM, said the partnership was an exciting opportunity for both organisations.
“The partnership between SLSQ and Newstead Brewing Co combines two of Australia’s favourite things – an appreciation of good beer, and the iconic red and yellow surf lifesavers who protect our coastline.”
“The Nineteen 09 beer will be available all over Queensland, not just on the coast, with a percentage of each can sold going straight back into supporting beach safety services and our volunteer lifesavers.”
“This is an opportunity for all Queenslanders to raise a glass and raise some funds for our lifesaving heroes at the same time,” he said.
Our own Chief Executive Officer, Mark Howes, is thrilled to support the iconic organisation.
“Newstead Brewing Co is ecstatic to announce a partnership with Surf Life Saving Queensland. SLSQ has a substantial history of leadership, safety advocacy and community awareness throughout the Queensland coastline,” Howes said.
“It is a privilege to help support the fantastic work of surf lifesaving within the great state of Queensland. Newstead was founded on the principals of community and quality and we cannot think of a partnership that aligns with our core values better than with SLSQ.”
“We look forward to celebrating the exceptional work of SLSQ and reinvesting in such a fundamental Queensland organisation.”
We engaged with volunteer lifesavers and involved them in every step of the process from deciding what the beer was going to taste and smell like through to the name of the beer and what the can would look like.
We quickly agreed on three things; Nineteen 09 needed to refresh and revive, it must incorporate an undercurrent of summer fruits with just a splash of hoppy bitterness and lastly the can really needed to reflect the hero SLSQ colours of red and yellow.
Nineteen 09 will not only raise funds for surf lifesaving, but will also serve to push SLSQ’s key water safety campaign message ‘Don’t Drink and Swim’ right into the hands of Queenslanders.
Nineteen 09 is available from today via our online store and will be available soon across the state at participating surf clubs, liquor retailers and outlets.
