The upward trajectory of the award-winning Mismatch Brewing Co, located in the Adelaide Hills, continues with the arrival of new Head Brewer Tom Wood.

Having grown up in Adelaide, Tom moved to Victoria after graduating from university and making a switch to study the art of brewing before working at Bright Brewery and, mostly recently, Little Creatures in Geelong. In what may have been a premonition of events to come, Wood said his long-term dream was to return to South Australia and work for another brewery he was proud to represent.

“During a conversation with a friend I was asked where I’d love to go if I was to return home, and Mismatch was the first brewery I listed” says Wood. “Less than a week later I saw the Head Brewer’s job advertised.”

During his career, Wood has observed the rise of Mismatch from nomad brewery to establishing its incredible cellar door set-up, a collaboration with Adelaide Hills Distillery, The Hills Cider Company, Ashton Valley Fresh and Vinteloper, with crow-eater pride.

“It was great to watch Mismatch grow from afar and to see the team claim the Champion Beer Trophy at the inaugural Independent Brewers Association’s Indies awards before going on to claim medals and trophies year after year including the most recent 2021 awards”

That was just a couple of months ago, with Wood joining the team this week. It also marks Mismatch Co-founder and General Manager Ewan Brewerton handing over the Head Brewer reins, a role he’s filled for the past decade.

“We’ve got a young team and setting the right culture takes the right leader,” says Brewerton. “We believe Tom has the right personality and skills to lead by example and help the team grow.”

“Tom’s drive, energy and passion is what caught our attention when we first met him, but he also showed he knows the importance of quality, process and consistency. These are the driving forces behind Mismatch, which makes him a natural fit.”

Initially, Wood will be acclimating to the new environment and meeting his team, numbering about 10 brewing staff. His key roles will include mentoring the team to create consistent, quality beers while growing the brand and output volumes.
