Young Henrys combines algae and CO2 capture technology

Inner West brewing juggernauts, Young Henrys, today continue their mission to “drink beer, save the world” with further advancements to The Algae Project.

This week, Young Henrys adds Chart Industries’ (NYSE: GTLS) Earthly Lab’s CiCi®carbon dioxide (CO2) capture technology to their existing efforts to capture CO2 with algae bioreactors in the brewery, reducing their total CO2 footprint even further and harnessing CO2, a key resource used in breweries. This first-of-a-kind combination not only cuts down on CO2 in the atmosphere but also turns it into two important things: gas for the brewery and food for algae. Collaborating with the University of Australia (UTS) lab, Young Henrys has found a way to use their CO2-rich algae as a feed supplement by combining it with spent grain. This special feed can be given to livestock, helping to reduce methane emissions. Continuing to brew for the greater good, Young Henrys innovative CO2 capture portfolio approach can be scaled throughout Australia and taken globally.

Young Henrys brewery captures thousands of pounds of CO2 each month, largely using it to offset all of the CO2 consumption used to purge the tanks. The 400-litre algae bioreactor installed in the brewery produces as much oxygen as one hectare of Australian forest. The UTS lab is working with Young Henrys to explore ways to scale up microalgae production, all while ensuring the well-being of precious livestock.

Carbon capture innovation has long been reserved for large-scale projects, but Young Henrys and Earthly Labs has provided small-scale technology to make it affordable and achievable for all-size businesses. The CiCi (Oak) system is the size of a refrigerator, and offers easy installation and remote monitoring and service.
