There is no keeping a good beer man down and James Smith – aka The Crafty Pint – is at it again. Amongst his many major achievements he created the finest craft beer website in the country, then accidently started Good Beer Week and myriad other beer-related advances. He is a one-man beer missionary and he’s at it again. Now he has organised for any Joe Schmoe to come up with an idea for a beer and, if it meets approval, it will be made at Temple Brewing. Simple, elegant, brilliant.
Brews News became the first entrant with an idea for a beetroot infused chocolate stout (it works really well in cakes, why not in a beer?) called ‘Get Rooted’. I can’t see anyone topping that, but do your best Australia…
Australians invited to create their dream beer
The hunt is on for Australia’s first People’s Pint – a beer invented by the people and chosen by the people for the people.
Australians over 18 are invited to come up with ideas for their perfect beer. The best, most creative, funniest and most innovative will be put to a public vote, with the most popular beer to be brewed by one of the country’s leading brewers and launched during May’s Good Beer Week in Melbourne.
The People’s Pint is a new initiative from The Crafty Pint, an online guide to Australia’s fast-growing craft beer scene.
“The world of beer has never been as exciting or colourful as it is today, with brewers here and overseas creating some truly amazing beers where the only limit is their imagination,” says Crafty Pint founder James Smith. “We thought it would be fun to open up the process to the country to see what an entire nation can concoct.
”Brewers have been joining forces with other brewers, with writers, with record labels – even with bands – to create beers, so why not with the people who drink their beers?”
The winning beer will be brewed by Melbourne‘s Temple Brewery & Brasserie. Owners Ron and Renata Feruglio, who opened their new venue in East Brunswick just before Christmas after several years brewing at other breweries, have agreed to produce The People’s Pint. They will also host the beer’s launch during Good Beer Week. Bintani, a supplier of ingredients to the brewing industry, will provide all raw materials.
“As part of my job as a brewer, I get to dream up beer ideas and recipes every day, but that’s an opportunity the majority miss out on,” says Ron.
“The People’s Pint is both daunting and incredibly exciting for us at Temple,” says Renata. “It gives everyone the opportunity to put forward their idea of the perfect beer, and will give us the opportunity to create what will hopefully be a great beer.”
The competition is designed to be open to anyone, no matter how great or small their knowledge of beer. All we’re looking for is a name and an idea. It could be for a beer that conjures up a feeling or a memory of the best beer someone has ever had. It could be for a flavour that has never been attempted in a beer or the prized recipe of an avid
home brewer. To take part, people simply need to head to peoplespint.com.au and enter their beer’s name and describe it in 50 words or less.
The top six will be selected by a team of judges on March 12, 2012, and posted on The People’s Pint website for two weeks for a public vote. The beer with the most votes on March 26, 2012, will be named the first ever People’s Pint, at which point Ron Feruglio will draw up a recipe and brew the beer.
As well as having their dream beer released as a commercial brew, the person who submits the winning idea will receive two tickets to the launch and a case of the beer. If they live outside Victoria, we will make provisions to bring them to Melbourne for the launch, as outlined in the terms and conditions on The People’s Pint website.
Full details of The People’s Pint launch will be revealed on March 14, 2012, when the Good Beer Week 2012 program is launched.
