Trade mark activity highlights no-alc growth

No-alcohol trade mark applications are on the rise with recent numbers indicating significant growth for the trend.

Within the three month period of January to March 2022, 211 trade mark applications were lodged and accepted by IP Australia in Category 32 (Beer). 52 of these trade marks were listed as no-alcohol.

Over the past few years, the no-alcohol market has seen significant growth with breweries and brands including Modus Operandi Brewing‘sNort, Sobah Beverages and Mornington Peninsula contributing to the sector, which is projected to increase 31 per cent by 2024, according to numbers from IWSR reported by The Age.

Last year, Heaps Normal successfully completed a Series A funding round raising$8.5 million dollars, 16 months after the brand first launched.

While the trade mark applications indicate the growth of the trend within the industry, there have been other initiatives marking the surge.

Last week, the Independent Brewers Association (IBA) launched a webinar called a Sober Discussion which includes a panel of professionals discussing the technical and safety aspects of no and low alcohol brewing.

Meanwhile, retailer Dan Murphy’s launched a non-alcoholic bar, ZERO%, in Melbourne last month with patrons having the option of buying non-alcoholic drinks from the bar as well as the retailer itself.

“Australians are embracing zero alcoholic beverages more than ever before, but for those who are still hesitant, ZERO% is the perfect place to discover what is undoubtedly the hottest drinks trend at the moment in a contemporary setting,” Dan Murphy’s Managing Director Alex Freudmann said in a media release.

While there is no guarantee the trade mark applications will be approved, the high numbers coming from the beginning of the year could be an indication of what’s to come within the no-alcohol sector.
